Common auto electrical jobs in Cambridge
Cambridge is where the eastern shore meets the open road, so towing, farm vehicles and business fleets all feature.
Caravans heading for the east coast
Cambridge sits on the main road out to Sorell, and from there many caravans and camper trailers head up the east coast. A heavier van needs electric brakes and a properly set up brake controller in the tow vehicle. The controller has to be wired with cable that can carry the current and adjusted to the trailer's loaded weight. Our guide how to install an electric brake controller takes you through it.

Keeping the fridge cold on weekends away
A second battery lets you run a fridge and lights at camp without flattening the starting battery. Many newer vehicles have smart alternators that lower their output once the main battery is full, so a basic isolator may not charge the auxiliary battery properly. A DC-DC charger fixes that by boosting and regulating the charge. Our guide DC-DC charger or isolator compares the two.

Farm utes and rodent damage
North of Cambridge, the Coal River Valley is known for wine and specialty crops. Utes, quad bikes and tractors parked in sheds there are easy targets for mice and rats, which chew wiring for nesting material. The first sign is often a vehicle that won't start or a random warning light after sitting. Repairs need proper soldered or crimped joints, not tape. Our guide rodent damage to car wiring explains what to look for.

Business vehicles near the airport
The council sees Cambridge's position near Hobart Airport and the Tasman Highway as a draw for light industry, and new units keep going up along Kennedy Drive. The utes, vans and delivery vehicles that work out of them do a lot of stop-start running, which is hard on alternators and batteries. A whining noise, a battery light or dimming headlights at idle can all point to the alternator. See how do I know if my alternator needs replacing.

Cambridge auto electrical questions
Why isn't my caravan battery charging on the drive?
The usual causes are cable that is too thin over the length of the vehicle and van, a poor earth, or a smart alternator that drops its voltage once the main battery is full. A DC-DC charger in the van or the tow vehicle solves most of these. Check the plug pins for corrosion and that the charge circuit has a fuse at each end.
Do I need a brake controller for my trailer?
If your trailer has electric brakes, yes. The controller in the tow vehicle sends the signal that applies them. Whether the trailer needs brakes at all depends on its loaded weight, so check the compliance plate and the Tasmanian rules for your trailer mass. An auto electrician can fit and set the controller correctly.
How do I keep mice out of a ute that sits in the shed?
Keep feed, grain and nesting material away from where the vehicle is parked, and start and move it regularly. Some owners set traps or use deterrents around the shed. Check the engine bay for droppings or shredded material before driving, and look closely at wiring near the firewall and under the bonnet insulation.
Local tip for Cambridge
If you are setting off up the east coast with a van, do a full lights and brakes check in Cambridge before you join the highway. The road narrows to two lanes past Midway Point and over the Sorell causeway, which is not where you want to stop with a fault. Test the breakaway system too.
