Live in North Hobart and need an auto electrician? Most cars here are parked on the street outside older houses and terraces, so frosty windscreens, heater and demister faults and batteries tired out by winter make up a lot of the work.

Common auto electrical jobs in North Hobart

North Hobart's older streets mean few garages and lots of kerbside parking. Cars sit out in the cold, and that drives a different mix of faults to the CBD.

Heater fans stuck on high

When your car sits on the street overnight in a North Hobart winter, the heater gets a hard workout every morning. A fan that works only on its top speed is one of the most common faults, and the usual cause is a burnt-out blower motor resistor. It is generally behind the glovebox or under the dash and is often a reasonably quick replacement. A fan that squeals or stops altogether points to the motor itself or a corroded connector.

Rear demisters that won't clear

On damp mornings a working rear demister makes the difference between seeing behind you and guessing. The heating lines on the glass can be broken by a scraper, a box sliding in the back or a lifted tab where the wire connects. A test light along each line finds the break, and small breaks can be repaired with conductive paint. If none of the grid heats, check the fuse, relay and switch first. Our guide how to check and replace a fuse covers that step.

Batteries in kerbside cars

A car parked on the street on a frosty night starts the day with a cold, sluggish battery. Older cars in North Hobart that only run to the shops or into the city never give the battery a chance to recover. If the engine turns over slowly on cold mornings, the battery is warning you. It is better to replace it on your own terms than at the kerb before work. See is it my starter motor or my battery for how to tell the difference.

Interior lights and parasitic drains

Doors and boots that don't quite latch, or a map light bumped on while unloading shopping on a dark winter evening, are classic causes of a flat battery by morning. In older cars, a faulty door switch can keep the courtesy light on without you noticing. If the battery keeps going flat for no obvious reason, a parasitic drain test with a multimeter will show whether something is drawing power while the car is off.

Vans on the Elizabeth Street strip

The restaurants and cafes on Elizabeth Street between Tasma and Federal Streets rely on delivery and catering vans that stop and start all day. Those vans run fridges, inverters, lights and reversing cameras, often added over the years with mixed wiring quality. Overloaded circuits, undersized cable and missing fuses cause melted plugs and flat batteries. A tidy fuse block and correctly sized cable fix most of it. Our guide what size cable do I need helps with the sums.

North Hobart auto electrical questions

Why does my heater fan only work on the highest setting?

The lower speeds go through a blower motor resistor or speed controller, while the top speed usually bypasses it. When the resistor burns out, only the highest speed is left. It is a common winter fault in Hobart because heaters run so often. Replacing the resistor normally fixes it, but if the connector is scorched, that needs replacing too.

Is it safe to pour hot water on a frozen windscreen?

No. Very hot water on cold glass can crack the windscreen, and it can refreeze on the glass and on the road. Run the engine with the demister on, use a plastic scraper, and give it a few minutes. A working fan and demister make frosty mornings much easier, so get any faults fixed before winter.

Local tip for North Hobart

With street parking, a cheap windscreen cover saves a lot of scraping on frosty mornings and takes some load off the battery, because you aren't idling with the fan and demister on high for ten minutes. If you do idle to clear the glass, switch off the seat heaters and headlights until you're ready to go.
