The City of Hobart runs from the CBD and Sullivans Cove up Elizabeth Street to North Hobart and south along the river to Sandy Bay. Most auto electrical work here is on private cars, from short-trip city runabouts and students' older hatchbacks to newer hybrids and prestige cars on the hills.

Suburbs in Hobart City

Hobart's inner suburbs are tightly packed between the River Derwent and the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. In the CBD, traffic feeds through the Macquarie and Davey Street one-way pair that links the Southern Outlet, Brooker Highway and Tasman Highway, and many cars live in multi-storey car parks. North Hobart is older houses with street parking and a busy restaurant strip. Sandy Bay mixes the university, student share houses and expensive homes on steep slopes. Cold winters, hills and short trips are the common thread, but the vehicles and faults change from street to street.

Common auto electrical jobs in Hobart City

Cold mornings, steep streets and lots of short city trips account for much of the auto electrical work between the CBD and Sandy Bay.

Batteries that give up in winter

Hobart's July mornings average under 5 degrees, and a cold battery has noticeably less cranking power just when a cold engine needs more. A battery that coped through summer can fail on the first frosty week of June. Cars that only do short hops around the city make it worse, because the alternator never fully recharges the battery. A load test in autumn, before the cold sets in, is the easiest way to avoid a morning without a car. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains the numbers.

Heaters, demisters and fogged windows

In a Hobart winter the heater and rear demister get used every day, and that is when their faults show up. A heater fan that only works on the highest setting usually points to a failed blower resistor. A rear demister that stops clearing the glass may have a broken grid line or a lifted terminal tab. These are electrical jobs, not air conditioning gas jobs, and are often simple to fix. Clear windows matter on dark, damp mornings, so it pays not to put them off.

Hybrids and newer city cars

Hybrids, plug-in hybrids and EVs are a common sight around the CBD and the inner suburbs. Nearly all of them still rely on a small 12V battery to wake up the computers and close the main relays, and when that battery is weak the car won't start, however full the main pack is. Testing and replacing the 12V battery is routine work. The high-voltage battery, orange cabling and inverter are strictly for trained, licensed professionals.

Salt air along the river

Cars parked near Sullivans Cove, Salamanca and the Sandy Bay foreshore pick up salt from the Derwent estuary. Over time it works into battery terminals, earth straps and unsealed plugs, causing slow cranking, dim lights and odd warning lights. Winter rain and damp, still mornings keep connections wet for longer. Cleaning and protecting the terminals once a year is cheap and prevents a lot of fault-finding. See how to clean corroded battery terminals for the method.
